This blog contains information for Mrs. Pluta's classes at the Lorain County JVS. It is hoped that Our Classroom Connection will keep students engaged in class discussion outside the school day.

Winter Break Schedule

The further we get through December, the more frequent the questions become about when break begins.  Have no fear...all of us are ready for a break from our daily scheudules.

Please remember that students attending JVS are expected to follow our break schedule.  Even if your associate school begins break earlier, you are expected to be in attendance.  I have a schedule in my classroom of all the breaks, but our vacation begins after school on Friday, December 21st.  We start back to class on Monday, January 7th.

A Time for Celebrations

Today is a special day in my house, the Feast of St. Nicholas.  When I was a child, we would always set our shoes out the night of December 5th.  The next morning, on St. Nicholas' feast day, we would find some candy and a small gift in our shoes.  This is a traditional German custom and one that I've continued with my family.

Do you have any special customs that you've grown up with?  Think of one you'd like to continue when you have your own family.  Share it below for five bonus points by Sunday, December 9thRemember to include your name!

December Already?

Where has the year gone?  Sometimes I blink and weeks have gone by.  December is a busy month.  For many of the students, it is time to work on state competition preparations and tests.  For some it is time to start finalizing college plans.  For me, I should start my Christmas shopping!

Happy Thanksgiving!

What are you afraid of?

Lots of people have things they're afraid of.  A lot of people suffer from Coulrophobia, the fear of clowns.  For me, there's a pretty long list and I'm not sure I should share them with you!  I don't want this extra credit opportunity to backfire.

If you're interested in five bonus points, post a comment below.  Tell us what you're afraid of.  I'll be happy to give you your bonus points if your comment is posted before school starts on Monday, November 19th.

Election Day

Tuesday is election day for America.  If you're a registered voter, please exercise this right!  We are very lucky to have the chance to influence how our towns, states, and country are run.

If you're not a registered voter, sign up as soon as you're able.  This is a right that we shouldn't ignore.

Second Quarter Begins

The best part of a new quarter is that every has a fresh start.  If you weren't thrilled with your grades for the first quarter, you have the chance to improve this time.
We have a change in grading this year at JVS.  Each semester, students have the chance to earn a half credit towards their Social Studies requirements for graduation.  In order to do so, students must have two passing grades.  If you passed the first quarter, you're off to a great start.  If not, you still have a chance.
Good luck to everyone in starting this quarter the right way!

This year's show will be held on October 20th from 9AM to 4PM.

JVS Community Appreciation Day

This Saturday, September 22nd, the Lorain County JVS will host our second annual Community Appreciation Day.

This day is meant to show our thanks to the thirteen associate schools and all of our Lorain County.  JVS was created to assist our community in training high school and adult education students for jobs that are available in Lorain County today.  With continued support, we'll be able to achieve this goal with our current students.

Please consider visiting JVS this Saturday between 10am and 3pm.  At 2:00, we'll have a dedication ceremony for our new 9/11 Memorial.

Today is Constitution Day!

The Constitution is the most important items in our government and today is our day to recognize and celebrate its 225th anniversary.  Many people take this important document for granted, but it contains all the rules our nation must follow.  It holds our rights and protections and should never be ignored.

To celebrate Constitution Day, consider participating in one of these activities:
  • Read The U.S. Constitution at our National Archives website.
  • If you're super creative, you may want to enter the poster contest sponsored by GovDocKids.
  • Take one of the games on the Constitution at iCivics.
  • If you haven't already, register to vote by visiting Ohio's Secretary of State's webpage.  Celebrate the right guaranteed through the Constitution.
  • Learn about some of the 39 delegates that created this document.
However you choose to celebrate Constitution Day, continue enjoying the freedoms of living in this wonderful nation!

It's Test Time!

Just a reminder that all Psychology students will be taking their Chapter One test on Monday, September 17th.  Students will be able to use their own hand-written notes.  Make sure you're prepared for the test!

Online Psychological Tests

We have discussed psychological tests in Psychology and students have had the chance to take a couple.  This website has free tests you can take including career and personality tests.

Just as we discussed in class, you can take the same test and get different results.  Lots of times it depends on your mood and surroundings.  If you take a test, remember it's just for fun!

September 11th Memories

On September 11, 2001, our country experienced horrific terrorist attacks.  It was a frightening time in American history, with a lot of unknowns.  Most of us had no immediate connection with the victims, but the pain for those that lost loved ones in the Pentagon, the World Trade Center, and on Flight 93 was felt by the entire nation.
As we reach the 11th anniversary, think back to that day.  What do you remember?  Post a response by Friday, September 14th, for five bonus points.

How long have we been doing this?

I don't know about all of you, but I feel like we've been back to school for months instead of weeks.  I'm already on full laziness mode!  I have to say all the classes seem to be going well and we've already had some great discussions.

Lots of students have already had some field trips, most to the Ropes Course.  This is a great team building activity and I know everyone that has gone has enjoyed the experience.

We have quite a few five-day weeks this months, so make sure to stay on top of all your work.

Back to School Already?

I have to admit that I'm no where prepared for school to begin again.  It seems like yesterday I was packing up stuff for the summer--stuff I haven't looked at since June.  Hopefully you are all more prepared to start the school year!

My schedule will be a little different this year.  Instead of having a Psychology/Sociology class first period, I'm teaching another section of American Civics.  First period will be followed by two more Civics classes and one section of Psychology/Sociology.  I have lunch and conference period for 6th through 8th periods.  After that, there is one Practical Computer Applications class and another section of Psychology/Sociology.

If you need to reach me at any point during the school year, please do not hesitate.  Visit this blog often for updates, class summaries, and extra credit opportunities.  My class website will have copies of handouts and schedules.  You can call my classroom at (440) 774-1051, ext. 2498.  If I'm not available, please leave me a message.  I also check my email daily.
Even though I've enjoyed my summer, I am looking forward to a great school year.  I love teaching at Lorain County JVS!  I hope it's a wonderful experience for you too.

End of the Year

Juniors have reached the end of their year too.
  • This week, we'll take the final exam in Sociology--our test over chapter 14.  Remember, you can use any of your own hand-written notes.
  • In Computer Applications, we will give the PowerPoint presentations on your dream houses.  I can't wait to see what you've created!
Exams and presentations will take place on Monday and Tuesday.  Wednesday is a make-up day for any other work.  On Thursday, Juniors may leave school once all their work is completed.

No School!

Monday, May 28th, is Memorial Day.  In addition to having the day off school and being my youngest son's birthday, this is a special holiday for our nation.  We have the opportunity to honor those that have given their lives in defense of our nation.  Unfortunately, most of us know someone that has given the ultimate sacrifice.  Besides enjoying our day off, please remember that there is more to Memorial Day than picnics and parades.

Farewell Seniors!

Seniors have the chance to celebrate at school today--with the JVS Senior Extravaganza.  All seniors will have lunch, play games, and just relax with their friends and classmates.

Tomorrow, Lorain County JVS holds our Senior Recognition Ceremony at The Palace Theater in Lorain.  Seniors will receive their program certificates, receive scholarships, and one student from each program will be named Outstanding Senior.  It's an exciting day as students finish the their time with us and move on to new opportunities--college, the workforce, and the military.  Good luck to all my graduating seniors!  I know you'll all have tremendous success.

Final Exam Schedule

Just a quick reminder about our upcoming final exams.  Seniors have exams first, scheduled for May 21st and May 22nd.  Juniors get the chance to hang around school a little longer, so their exams are scheduled for June 5th, 6th, and 7th.  Students should all prepare for the exams.  If ANYONE fails the fourth quarter, he/she will need to pass the final exam to maybe receive course credit.  I promise, the exams for class will be more fair than the one in the cartoon above!

The 1960s

In American Civics, students have been learning about the 1960s.  This was a tremendous decade full of a variety of events that changed our nation.  We have discussed the Cold War, the Vietnam war, Civil Rights, and the scandals of President Nixon.  One item we were unable to really delve into was the music of the 60s.  For FIVE bonus points, share your favorite song from the 1960s.  Include the artist and a short explanation of why it's your favorite.  Be sure to post by Monday, May 7th, at the start of the school day.

Happy May Day!

May 1st is also known as May Day, a traditional Spring holiday in many cultures.  Some celebrate the beauty of the newly blooming Spring flowers, some decorate May Poles with colorful ribbons, and some deliver May baskets--baskets of goodies that they leave on neighbors' doors.

If you were able to establish a new custom for a May Day celebration, what would you like to do today?

Federal Income Taxes

Each year, Americans are required to file their federal income taxes.  For some, this is a stressful experience.

Fortunately, this year people have two additional days.  Since April 15th falls on a Sunday, the deadline was pushed to April 17th.  Make sure you've filed by then!

April Fools?

Today is April 1, also known as April Fools' Day.  It's a tradition to play tricks on people and then annoyingly laugh, "April Fools!"  I have heard this a few times from my kids and I have to say I'm not a fan.

So, why am I put through this torture every year?  The short answer is we don't know!  The idea of an April fool has been around for over 400 years, and there's no definite explanation.

Just a reminder...

Teachers have an in-service day on Friday, March 30th.  We will be finalizing third quarter grades and preparing work for the fourth quarter.  Just a bit more than two months to go!

End of the Third Quarter

Just a reminder that Thursday is the end of the Third Quarter.  All work must be completed if students want to receive any credit.  Look for report cards some time before Spring Break.

At the JVS, students must receive two passing grades for the the second semester.  If a student would happen to fail the third quarter, he/she would have to pass both the fourth quarter and the final exam.

Best Blog in Cleveland?

Cleveland Magazine is in search of the best local blog.  One of our own JVS teachers, Mr. Brandyberry, has a blog entered in the contest and he's made it to the final four.

On Sunday, we move our clocks an hour forward.  At 2AM (or earlier if you're old like me), Daylight Savings Time goes into effect.  The result should be some extra time with the sun.

Don't forget or you'll be running late all day!

Goodbye February, Hello March!

While March doesn't have a ton of holidays this year, it has some other special significance.  March is known as Irish American Month, Music in our Schools Month, National Women's History Month, Red Cross Month, National Craft Month, National Peanut Month, Poetry Month, and Social Workers' Month.  Wow!

For FIVE bonus points, be the first to share another honor for March, or any other month.  Be sure to include your name with the post so I'm able to give you your extra credit.  Post by Sunday, March 4th to earn your points!

Leap Day

February 29th is known as Leap Day.  During most years, February only has 28 days.  Once every four years, an extra day is added to February.  We need to add this day because our calendar is six hours shorter than the solar year.  Instead of adding six hours each year, we simply add an extra day every four years.  I guess that is a little easier!
